Tall Ships

The Tall Ships race is going to be held here in Falmouth and it is a marvellous opportunity for visitors to enjoy this spectacular event.

We're very fortunate to be able to host the start of the race to celebrate the 500th year of the founding of Funchal by the Portuguese on the island of Madeira.

The race starts in Falmouth, it goes to Elhavo on mainland Portugal, and then from there sails to Madeira.

The ships will start to arrive in Falmouth on the 9th of September 2010, and the race will actually start in the afternoon of the 13th September, with the first leg going from Falmouth to Ílhavo.

We already have some 10 Class A ships, these are ships with square rigs the ones that you always see in photographs in the papers. They are beautiful old vessels with their great big square rig sails at ninety degrees across the masts, which make a wondrous sight when they're sailing.

These ships will be tied up in the docks and available for the public to view between the 9th and the 12th of September. So anybody who is interested can go down to the docks, go on these ships and actually get a jolly good feel for the vessels. You can even get the fantastic opportunity to speak to the crews.

On race day the 13th, the ships will undock round about lunchtime and they will then form up in the Carrick Roads which is part of the harbour in Falmouth, and then they will start what we call a Parade of Sail. This will go from St Just which is a little village in the Carrick Roads, past St Anthony lighthouse and Pendennis Castle, along the main beaches of Falmouth including Castle, Gyllyngvase, Swanpool and Maenporth to a point of the mouth of the Helford river where they will then turn to go across the bay to the start line.

On start day, everybody will have the chance to view these beautiful ships all along the natural amphitheatre of Falmouth. Not only will there be 10 square riggers but there will also be some very large sail training vessels, anything between 18 and 40 metres in length, which are rigged with a fore and aft rig, which are more conventional yacht sails.

They make a wonderfully spectacular sight as well, so the total fleet will be some 30 vessels, which will depart midafternoon to go off to Portugal with nearly a thousand young trainees on board having a wonderful time!

So here is this incredible spectacle to view, and to all of you wanting to come down and see it - I suggest you book early!

It is anticipated that a fleet of about 30 tall ships made up of approximately 8 of the very large Class A square rigged ships, traditionally rigged Class B vessels and Class C and D yachts. The Tall Ships will race from Falmouth at the beginning of September to the Port of Aveiro in Portugal before the stage race to Funchal, Madeira.

Tall Ship Falmouth Cornwall 2008 In 1998 when the Tall Ships Festival was last hosted in Falmouth, 150,000 people came to experience the Tall Ships race which contributed some £24 million into the local economy. Due to the significant impact the Tall Ships will bring again to the port and district we have agreed to be the lead accountable body for the event".

“Falmouth played host to the international Tall Ships Race in 1982, and many people will remember the huge success of the Tall Ships Festival in 1998. The port now has a permanent organisation in place to welcome sail training ships, and is recognised as a ‘sail training friendly’ port" said Councillor Mike Cox, Chairman of Carrick District Council. “Hosting the fleet for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta will serve to strengthen this partnership, as well as the tourism and economic interests of Cornwall. We are delighted with the decision.”

John Hick, Chairman of Falmouth Tall Ships Association commented "We have this great opportunity again in Falmouth to bring many major sail training ships to Falmouth and show them the hospitality that is synonymous with the town. We are delighted to be chosen for the start of this prestigious race”.
